Yup, I started a blog. And it has been really REALLY difficult. Not because starting a blog is difficult – anyone can start a blog about literally anything, anywhere, and at any time. But because of the content. Because of the F-word. Because everyone (and I mean everyone) already has their own pre-conceived notions about what feminism is. This has been difficult because it has been a long time coming. Because I want it to be perfect. Because with each new feminist book that I read, podcast that I listen to, and story that I hear, I see so much of the important women in my life reflected back at me. And often times the men in my life too. This is difficult because I want to help them. Because I want to share what I’ve learned. Because I want to engage people and take part in pushing women’s rights forward through a personal and relatable approach. But all too often, feminism is dismissed. No matter how hard I try, no matter how much I tinker with the layout of this website and how many times I re-write this introductory post, I will undoubtedly be dismissed by many. Feminism, Shmeminism.
So I’m giving up on perfection. Giving up on worrying about how many people this blog will immediately reach and engage. I’m setting aside my unrealistic goal of changing the world, and creating a new goal of building a little community centered around a passion for women’s rights and a desire to advance them through awareness and everyday micro-actions. I plan to make this blog a mess of information and resources. Abridged versions of the podcasts I’ve learned from. Bite-sized pieces of my favorite books. I want to share stories, perspectives, poetry, and art from women of all different backgrounds and walks of life. I plan to cover topics ranging from imposter syndrome to the gender binary to sex, and everything in between. Whatever comes into my line of vision. Whatever snippets of information and resources pop up that may empower even just a handful of women.
And I’d like your help too. My perspective is limited. I recognize that my views may be narrowed by my race, class, sexual orientation, and total summation of life experiences. I may get some things wrong because of it. I may be missing something. I’m trying to learn here too, so please correct me when I’m off. And bring me information, resources, and perspectives if you have them. I want to be as inclusive as possible, so I need you to supplement me where I’m lacking. If you or anyone you know has something important or beautiful to contribute to this blog, please reach out - I’m eager to hear from you! I’m eager to start this journey. This is my love letter to women everywhere.
